Hydrangeas Hair Clip

Make a pretty flower hair clip from scraps!

This is based on a tutorial at http://sewingforscarlett.blogspot.com/2010/07/felt-hydrangeas.html where she made Hydrangeas out of felt.  Instead of felt I used scraps of blue cotton and more "petals" on mine.   I used an old hair clip so and a scrap of felt, so the only "new" for this project was the hot glue for the glue gun - other than that, it is an upcycle.

Items used:
  • Fabric Scraps
  • Scrap of felt
  • Scrap of paper
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Soda Can
  • Hair clip (or a barrette)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Place the soda can on a scrap of paper and draw a circle for a template and cut out.  Place the circle on a scrap of felt, draw around it and cut it out.

Cut out little X/petal shapes (like asideways "X") out of the cotton fabric.  I used about 35 little "X"s for this project and found it easier to fold the fabric over several times and cut out the "X"s freehand as opposed to drawing on the fabric and cutting out individually.

Start around the edges and work inward.  I found it easiest to fold up the X so there is a point at the bottom and dab a bit of the hot glue on the point and place it on the felt so you don't burn your fingers with the hot glue - is you want to push it down to secure it, use a pen or pencil.

Once you have glued down all of the pieces and it is fully covered, apply hot glue to the clip then press the flower on top of the clip.

From the  underside, trim around the edges so none of the felt piece is sticking out but without cutting any of the flower pieces off and it is ready to go!

Bejeweled Mini Hair Clips

Turn dollar store mini hair clips from littly girly to glitzy glam with some paint, jewels and glue.
There are several hairstyles that I want to try where I need several small pins or clips, but the only ones that I found were the kind for little girls and in multi-colors which would clash with most of my outfits, so I decide to glam them up to make them more adult and classy looking.

Items used:

  • 1 pkg. mini hair clips

  • Metallic acrylic paint (silver and/or gold)
  • Small plastic Jewels (Dollar Tree, 130 for $1)

  • Foam Paint brush

  • Strong glue (I used Amazing Goop)

I poured paint into a plastic juice can lid and then dipped the brush in until well saturated, then opened up the clip clamp and dabbed the paint on the inside of each clip, then allowed it to dry.

After the inside was dry, I painted the tops, just dabbing them to cover, but not so much as to gum up the the spring, then allowed that to dry.

Then paint the outside of the clips and allow to dry.

I did this three times for each clip to cover them uniformly.
I picked out the jewels that I wanted to use for each clip, then I put a dab of glue on one side then affixed the jewel to it and allowed it to dry and you are ready to rock and roll with them.

SUNFLOWER FASCINATOR

This was made with scraps and leftovers from other projects. Items needed:
  • Fabric
  • Button
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Glue Stick
  • Hair Clip

Cut 12 petal shapes - sort of like an Conehead Easter Egg shape - into the fabric (I folded my fabric over several times then cut several shapes at once).  Note: The button that I used for this project in the picture below is a DIY Dorset button made out of the plastic ring off of a milk jug and scrap of fabric. The tutorial is here: http://craftsandcreationswithkathy.blogspot.com/2009/04/diy-fabric-buttons.html

Fan out into a basic flower shape with 6 of the petals, then put the other six petal in between the lower layer of petals.

Hand stitch the petals together at the base all the way around until you come back to the first petal, then pull the thread taut to pull all petals towards the center.

Stitch the button to the flower. Use the hot glue gun to glue the hair clip to the back of the fascinator.

I made this awhile back, but I am linking it up on  Blue Cricket Design's "Show and Tell" Wednesdays as we could all use a little bit of Spring in our lives and I always think of Spring when I see sunflowers.   There are lots of other cool projects linked up - click over on the hyperlink to check them out and happy crafting!

FUN FABRIC FLOWER FACINATOR MADE WITH DIY DORSET SINGLETON BUTTON

I had originally planned to make something more elaborate, but working full time and my ex still recovering from surgery and staying with us until he recouperates, I ran out of time. This quick and simple last minute project is a melding of old ideas with new technology and will go with a red dress that I have that has obnoxiously large cheery red flowers on it. The tutorial for the button in the center is based on the following, except I used a plastic ring off of a soda bottle instead of a plastic ring. http://www.craftstylish.com/item/42746/how-to-make-singleton-buttons I made the button using the plastic ring off of a plastic soda bottle and then cut a yellow scrap of fabric in a circle and hand stitched around the edges the pulled the string (like you do when you are making a fabric yo-yo) and then hand stitched just inside the inner edge all the way around the inside of the button then stitch up the button's back. To make the facinator flower, I used a scrap of red glitter nylon net about 6-8 inches wide and folded it into 8 inch squares, then sewed the button on the middle, then cut the petal into the flower, then I hand stithced the button to the fabric. I then used a hot glue gun to hot gule the flower to a hair clip.
