Miu Miu Inspired Rhinestone Embellished Flats

This is for Day 18 of the 30 Days of Creativity www.30daysofcreativity.com and the theme today is "Feet". I had seen the tutorial for these over at Chic Steals where she showed her version of the $745 shoes Miu Miu was selling that she made for $15 and I decide to spiff up and old scuffed pair of shoes except I left off the smaller rhinestones because I didn't have any on hand. This is what they looked like before:

T Shirt To Argyle Drop Waist Dress

See T Shirt To Argyle Drop Waist Dress and 1000's of others - or share your own on Cut Out + Keep

This is for http://30daysofcreativity.com/ and the theme was "Argyle" so I decided to turn a toddler t-shirt into a dress for http://www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com/howyoucanhelp.htm, which is a non-profit organization that accepts donations of homemade dresses for little girls around the world who don't have one.

As I had only seen Argyle in solid colors before I decided to try with print fabric and stitching instead and attached a skirt in coordinating fabric, putting a decorative black stitch at the hem.  It was simple and fun to make.

I have posted a tutorial over at Cut Out + Keep

Retro Warhol '60's Inspired Shoes

I made this for the "Picture This" challenge entry at Craftster.org. http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=311893.0 I wanted to dress up thrift store sandals (.99 cents marked down 50%) into something retro-kitschy cool, yet somewhat personalized, and came up with this project to use a photo of my son and turn it into a Warholian collage then put it on some fashion accessories in different forms. Total cost for this project was under $2 out-of-pocket. Items used for project:
  • Sandals
  • Photo collage (see below-.19 cents each through Snapfish developed at Walgreens)
  • 1/8 inch black ribbon (.50 cents a roll, Walmart)
  • Amazing Goop Glue (on hand, but to buy new is about $3)
  • Packing tape (on hand, but to buy new is $1 at Walmart of the Dollar store)
  • Black Gloss fabric paint (on hand, but to buy new less than $1 at most craft stores)

Here is link on how I made the photo for the project using free software from Picnik.com:

http://craftsandcreationswithkathy.blogspot.com/2009/07/warholian-photo-collage-part-2.html

I then used packing tape over the top of the entire photo to seal and protect it.

I then cut the pictures into strip and put the glue good on the back. I used my finger to smooth it, but it got real messy, I would recommend using a popsicle stick or maybe a Q-tip. I took one strip and put it flush against the outside edge, then angled it over to the other side - it went over the edge a bit on the other side, on one end, but I trimmed it off. Smooth is down and hold the edges in place until is it sticks without the edges lifting up (about 2-3 mins). Do the same with the other piece. Put a small line of glue on the top edge of the photo, starting with the outside edge and all the way across, then attach the ribbon, pressing into place as you go and cut off when you get to the other edge. Repeat for the bottom of the photo, then repeat the entire sequence for the other shoe.

I then put a small line of blue around the bottom edge of the sandal and glued down the ribbon all of the way around. I then used black gloss fabrib paint and went around all of the edges of the shoe to outline it.

Easy Reconstruction - Long Sleeve Polo Shirt to Shrug

This is based on Evenl's project at CO+K in which she turns a t-shirt into a shrug. http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/tshirt_shrug I love the overall look and will make another one at some point, but do have a few minor issues with the one that I made, probably because I used a heavier weight polo shirt instead of t-shirt. Items used:
  • 1 long sleeve polo shirt
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Straight Pins
  • Seam Gauge
  • 2 yds light gray ribbon
  • Clear nail polish (put on the ends of the ribbon so they don't fray

First I cut down the center and remove the collar and the buttons. As I used a 1 inch ribbon, I folded the edges over 1 1/4 inches and pinned it in place all the way around

The shoulders didn't lay right so I had to make a cut on each side at the back neckline at the shoulders before stitching all the way around.

As this is something I am just going to wear around the house, I didn't bother trying to cover it up, but the next time I make one I will probably use seam binding or bias tape to finish the edges to give it a more professional look.

I am also going to probably add a large bead to the bottom of each ribbon as it has a habit of sliding into the garment on one side then I have to take it out and re-thread the darn thing.

BUTTERFLY MOBILE

This project was for a Mother's Day gift for my son's step-Grandmother. It was originally intended that he do the project on his own, but it turned out to be more of a joint venture as it was tricker than I had estimated.
Nearly everything for this project was purchase from the Dollar Tree and spent $3, as I had scissors, thread and the ribbon on hand already.
The original project with a tutorial was found at
Items used:
  • Tissue paper (multi-colored)
  • Wooden wreath (medium sized)
  • Pipecleaners (multi-colored)
  • Scissors
  • Thread (could use fishing line also)
  • 1/8th inch wide ribbon

The butterfly shapes are made by cutting approx. 9x6 inch pieces of tissue paper folded in half with as curve at the bottom and side (see below) but straight at the top. You then use 3 butterfly shapes for each butterfly. My son chose to use mostly one color for the top and bottom and a contrasting color in the center.

You then choose the color of pipecleaner you want to use with each butterfly.

To make the butterfly, center the pipecleaner then fold it over the lower edge, then scrunch the tissue paper to make the wings and then twist both sides of the pipecleaner together to make the butterfly.
Here is where it gets tricky; tie a piece of thread that is about 12-14 inches long through the pipecleaner at the bottom of the butterfly centering it then tie a knot. Then pull the threads up and tie a knot about an inch from the edge then tie a knot around the head of the butterfly, then trim the thread. It will look like this when you are done.
Cut 4 pieces of ribbon about 10-12 inches long, tie each piece to the corner of the wreath in a knot, then pull all four pieces of ribbon together and center them, then tie knot.
Cut varying lengths of thread, tie to the center of the thread on each butterfly, then tie the thread to the wreath. This is easier if you have one person hold up the wreath and the other one tie the threads. We did this with each of the butterflies except the center one, which we attached with a ribbon to the knot at the center of the ribbons.

HEART THUMB PRINT NECKLACE

Close up of heart (indentation is the thumb print
Close up of back of heart
I made this to be more of kid's project for a child to do for a loved one, but it could be made into a more grown-up version by using jump rings, clasps and a chain instead of ribbon.
The pictures I took really do not do it justice because it looks much better in person and you can easily see the ridges of the finger print.
Cost for each necklace is less than 50 cents each.
************************************************************************ Materials:
- 1 block Fimo Clay - makes 4 hearts (on sale at Michael's .99)
- Hearts ice cube tray ($1.00 from Dollar Tree)
- 18-24 inches of 1/8th inch wide Ribbon (97 cents per spool from Walmart), depending on length preferred
- 2 beads with 1/8th inch opening or pony beads (on hand from broken Dollar store watch) for each necklace
- Straw from bagged juice drink like Capri Sun (free as it was a used one)
- Aluminum pie pan to bake the fimo (free as it was a used one)
Optional: Nodi Nail laquer pink with stars or ($1.00 from Dollar Plus) or any other nail polish
****************************************************************************************
Works out best to divide the fimo into segments then kneed each piece in your hands for a few minutes to make it more pliabe, then press it into the mold and smooth off the top of it.
Take out of the mold and place in the aluminum pie pan right side up. Have the child press their thumb print into the center of the heart. They will need to press very hard to make an indentation.
You may need to shape the crease in the center of the hear on top up a little as the pressing will flatten it out. Use the side of the straw to press the crease back in the heart.
Use the straw to punch a hole in the upper right hand side of the heart.
Bake the fimo clay in the oven at 275 degrees for 15 mins. Do not overbake.
Use the nail lacquer to paint the heart
Thread ribbon through heart front to back, then tie in a knot at the top.
Close up of bead to show size of opening
Thread one bead on each side of the ribbon.
Tie a knot at the end of the the two pieces of ribbon and you are done!
