No Sew Fleece Blanket from a Kit

This was made from a kit my son got for me for Christmas as he knows I like crafty things and our neighbor Dora made one and loves it and recommended it and he had made one previously for his Grandma.

 I am not for sure where he bought it, but I am guessing Walmart, but you can do the same thing with a two pieces of fleece that are a 1 1/2 yards and can easily be made while watching an hour long television program by laying them right sides facing out, cutting strips and tying them together.

The only difference in the one he made and the instructions for this was to cut a 5 inch square out of each corner and I ended up using a inch wide ruler and measuring in 5 inches whereas on the one he made and on his just used a Popsicle stick for the length and width of the strips and just angled around the edges with diagonal cuts.

But looking at them side by side they look about the same so either way works fine as far as the blanket goes.

As far as my son goes, he was around 15 when he made his blanket and now a few inches taller at 19 but slouching.  In the first picture he is peaking over with pride and in the second one had to be bribed with gas in his vehicle so I could take a picture of the blanket and he doesn't want to be seen with anything that pink.

Fleece Lap Blanket and a Fleece Project Roundup

This is just a quick and simple lap blanket made with two pieces of fleece and for under $8. 



I went to Hancock Fabrics as I needed to pick up sewing machine needles and had a 40% of notion item from their flier when I spotted the tiger print above on the $3 a yard remnant table and it turned out there was 1 1/4 yard and I dug through and found the black piece that is on the back and there was 1 2/3 yard.  I knew this would be perfect to make a lap blanket to put over my lap this winter while at the computer as the desk is near the front door and always cold in that area.

I didn't take pictures as I went as it is so simple you really don't need any.  I pinned right sides together on three sides and instead of cutting the black piece down to size I folded it over at the top and pinned the edge right sides together and stitched all the way around except leaving and opening around 6 inches wide at the top.  I then turned it right side out and stitched the opening shut and it was done in less than an episode of the X-Files.

Hancock Fabric is also having its "Fleece Fest" right now has most of their fleece fabrics on sale for $3.99 a yard, which would be great to make an inexpensive Christmas present like the above blanket, or here are some other projects that could be made:

RETRO OWL SUNGLASSES CASE

I found this awesome tutorial at CO+K by Peptogirl for this retro cool sunglasses case and knew I had to make a version of it!

I made my version out of fleece for the body and left over felt for the embellishments, then used googly eyes instead of felt ones and put the entire thing together with hot glue instead of sewing. For the closure, I used velcro circles.

Scotty Dog Scarf

My inspiration was this little stuffed Scotty Dog at "Cut Out And Keep" by Mrs. T.

Instead of making a stuffed Scotty Dog, I cut out the pieces and appliqued him to to a scarf. To make the scarf, I bought 1/2 yd. of fleece (most instructions only call for 1/4 yd., but this wider scarf you can use to tie around your head in extreme cold and it will keep the back of your neck covered to), cut about 1/4 inch at both ends then cut fringe up to one of the lines on both side of the fabric. (Cost for fabric - just under $2.00).

The Scotty dog himself is made from scraps of fabric from other projects and I cut the coat at the top and had to make some minor adjustments, then I hand stitched him on. Instead of cutting out the fabric bow, I used ribbon I already had and ties it around his neck on each dog.

I bought a pack of 100 different sized googly eyes in a packet for $1 and used the medium size and hand stitched them on also (you just poke 2 holes in the back of the eyes before you sew them on and use white thread.

I bought black fabric paint (.97 cents) and outlined him to cover up the hand stitching and I used coral fabric paint that I already had on hand for his nose.The total cost was under $4 and I still have 99 googly eyes and the black fabric paint left over for other projects.
