DIY Monster Hoodie in 30 minutes
This is based on this tutorial at Cut Out and Keep by Cuppy Cake Girl decorating a hoodie using 3 different colors of felt.
See Monster Hoodie! Roar! and 1000's of others - or share your own on Cut Out + Keep
Instead of using felt, I used outdated or damaged clothing I had on hand. The "teeth" are made from an old pair of white polyester shorts s, the "iris" of the eye from a silk dress and the "pupil" was off of a pair of parachute pants.
I also changed the eye to look more reptilian and placed farther apart so I could make it look like a "normal" hoodie with the hood down and I could tuck the "teeth" inside.
I sewed mine and from cut to finish took a little under half hour, but it could be possible to make using a craft glue that works on fabrics and it might take even less time.
Item I used:
- 1 old hoodie
- Paper and pen
- 3 different colors of felt or fabric
- Straight Pins
- Sewing Machine and Thread
- Sewing Needle
- Heat N Bond
- Iron
For my teeth, I drew I folded a piece of paper and cut at an angle to make a triangle on paper 41/2 inches wide and 4 1/4 tall, but if you have drawstring hoodie you might want to make it longer. I then pinned to the shorts and cut out each one then flipped the pattern upside down next to it (as illustrated in blue in the picture below) and repeated until I had a total of 8 teeth. For the eye, I folded a piece of paper into quarters and cut off the edges to make somewhat of a semi-circle that was 4 1/2 inches wide and 2 3/4 inches tall
Here is the "eye" unfolded. I made the "pupil" by folding paper into quarters then cutting a triangle that was wider at the bottom and sharper curve inward toward the top that was 1 1/8 inches wide and 4 1/4 inches tall (pictured on top of the "iris".
I drew the eye and pupil on top of the Heat N Bond and cut out then ironed on to the back for the fabric for the "eye" and "iris"
On the "pupil", peel off the backing, position where you want on the eye and iron on.
Peel the backing off of the "iris", position it on the hood.(you might pin then try on and check first). Once it looks the way you want on the hoodie, iron it to the hoodie.
To keep the fabric from fraying and secure it to the hoodie, I zigzagged around the edge of both the "pupil" and "iris" using a sewing machine.
For the "teeth", I had to position the edges behind the string in the hoodie (about an 1 5/8 inches from the edge), pinning four "teeth" on each side, overlapping slightly and stitch into place around 1 1/2 inches from the edge.
I also hand basted the "teeth" along the edge of the hoodie to help keep them in place.
You now have monster hoodie to wear:)

Too Small Hoodie to Punked Tunic/Mini Dress
A funky punky tunic/mini dress to wear on the weekends from a too small hoodie.
I got the hoodie over a year ago on clearance after Halloween for $2.50 and it had been in my closet since then and when I pulled it out, it was a wee bit too small,so I ended up revamping it into a punked Tunic/Mini Dress.
Items used:
I started on this over month ago cutting the ribbing off the bottom of the hoodie and up the sides and arms and cutting some of insets but wasn't sure about exactly how I wanted to it to look, but got tired of seeing it in my workbasket and just picked it up and winged putting it together last night.
I used a top that fit as a guideline to figure out how much to add on the sides compared to the hoodie to be revamped and a mini dress for the length. You could go through a lot of complicated measuring, but it is easier to go do this and cut bigger than you need and trim down what you don't.
I added what I needed to each side, pinning right sides together and sewing, then cut double the width needed for the skirt then sewed a hem in the bottom. I next sewed basting stitches along the top 1/2 inch away from the edges on the side, then sewed the sides of the skirt together using 1/2 inch seam then gathered the fabric and pinned it to the hoodie, right sides together and stitched it into place.
It seemed lacking so I decided to add a ruffle around the hood. It is just fabric that is approximately 3 inches wide and double the length of the circumference of the hood folded it in half with wrong sides together then stitched with a basting stitch 1/4 inch from the edge. I then gathered the fabric and pinned it inside the edge of the hoodie with the stitches facing towards the just far enough in so I would be stitching the drawstring and sewed it into place.
I then pressed pressed the ruffle up towards the edge of the hoodie so it would just peek out the edges.
I like how the hood ended up looking like a ruffled Peter Pan collar, but it did come out big. I felt a little like a goth Henrietta Hippo from New Zoo Review http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0296385/combined
when I first tried it on, but is starting to grow on me as it is sort of fun. I may take it in on the sides and through the sleeves, but then again, I may just leave it as is to wear on a PMS days to grocery.

UGLY BUT COMFY SWEATSHIRT MADE INTO A HOODIE
This was my first attempt and converting a sweatshirt to a pullover hoodie. I started with a plain black sweatshirt and cut off the ribbing at the neckline, sleeves and bottom.
I then used my son's hooded sweatshirt to make a "pattern" for the hood and the kangaroo pocket in front and used a Norman Rockwell "Freedom of Worship" flannel fabric that I bought at Hancock Fabrics for $1 yd.
and the hood,
others did not, specifically the kangaroo pocket.
It is uneven on the sides, is crooked and I tried the starburst stitch on my sewing machine and it was inconsistent depending on the bulk of the fabric - in some areas it is heavy and in other areas sparse.
I had planned on adding matching fabric to the bottom of the sleeve, but as it didn't turn out how I wanted I scratched that idea and just wear it as an around the house shirt. Even though it is ugly it is very warm and comfortable and my new fav around the house sweatshirt, so not it was not a total bust.
